~ Sharing the Culture ~ In the beginning, Great Sprit above gave to the animals and bird’s wisdom and knowledge and the power to talk to man. Great Spirit sent these creatures to tell man that He showed Himself through them. They would teach chosen man sacred songs and dance, as well as much ritual and lore. The creature most loved by Great Sprit is the eagle, for the eagle brings us the story of life. When the great eagles produce young, they create only two eggs, and as with the eagle, all living things have children of two kinds, so life may continue. The eagle feather is divided into two parts, part light and part dark. These represent daylight and darkness, summer and winter, peace and war, and life and death. There is a man and woman, male and female, body and sole, substance and shadow. Through our two eyes we see pleasant and unpleasant scenes. Through our two nostrils we smell good and bad odors. With our two ears we hear joyful news and words that make us sad. Our mind is divided between good and evil. Even though we may use our right hand for evil, such as war or striking a person in anger, we will keep our left hand (which is nearest to our heart) full of kindness. Although our right foot may lead us in the wrong path, our left foot will always lead us back to the right path. This lesson the great eagle brings to us and that is why we respect and care for the eagle, and that is why we use the feather of the eagle in our spiritual ceremonies.
